Grant Application Submission: Forest Health Focused

Date

August 21, 2024

Role

GIS Analyst - Spatial Analyst & Cartographer

Tools

ArcGIS Pro, Vibrant Planet Wildfire Modelling

Data Sources

Vibrant Planet Wildfire Modelling Data, Tuolumne County GIS Team, Tuolumne County Firesafe Council

Methodology

- Imported the fireshed into Vibrant Planet's (VP) Wildfire Modelling Tool
- Ran several iterations with differing priorities based on feedback from the group. This looked at things like proximity to road, elevation, tree density, etc.
- Exported the final iteration into ArcGIS Pro
- Reprojected the data from VP to NAD 83 StatePlane.
- Imported the Private Land data
- Ran a "Select By" query to identify any parcels within private land, and exported the selection into a new layer only including private parcels.
- Ran a definition query to only show private parcels larger than 5 acres.
- Overlaid the data from VP with the parcels.
- Shared the data to get local input from on-the-ground sources and determine if any parcels would be more desirable.
- Symbolized the map to highlight multiple treatment types.
- Exported and submitted with a $2.5 million dollar grant application.

Key Output

1 PDF Map for a grant application.

Goals

To show the collaboration and transparency involved in our work while showing the required project sites for the grant application. To show specific treatment types on the multiple project areas.

Impact / Results

Highlighted parcels for treatment after identifying the most important selection criteria (<30 degree slope, > 5 acre parcel, private, access to a road, one large anchor property, etc.).

This was the final map after months of work making our selections for treatment based on wildfire modelling using Vibrant Planet and community input from local foresters and stakeholders. It shows our recommended treatments and how that overlaps with some of our partners work. This was submitted as a part of a grant application.
