Atlas of the United States Trees by Elbert L. Little, Jr. (1971), U.S. Census Tiger/Line shapefiles (2023), AFF Internal service - area GIS layer
Methodology
- Imported:
- Digitized Tree Atlas data from databasin.org
- State and County Boundaries from ArcGIS Online sourced from the US Census Bureau.
- Internal data from AFF showing the intended counties for expansion.
Longleaf and Loblolly Pine Range Maps:
- Selected the states with loblolly tree atlas overlap and exported as the final state layer. Repeated for the longleaf data.
- Selected the counties with loblolly tree atlas overlap and exported it as the final county layer. Repeated for the longleaf data.
- Grouped the data by longleaf or loblolly
Expansion Map:
- Selected the states that overlapped with the internal expansion data
- Exported the states selected by the above query. Repeated the process with the county data that overlapped with the internal expansion data.
All Maps:
- Imported the papercut style from ArcGIS Online
- Symbolized the data layers using the imported style
- Updated the final map layout and exported.

Impact/Results
These maps provided a visual for conversation and led to the program expanding and becoming one of the most important programs at American Forest Foundation.
Leadership at AFF needed to present on where we had selected to potentially expand our programming to. Helping the audience better understand why we wanted to expand in the area we had selected was crucial. It gave a very clear vision for our future.
