Methodology
Topographical & Imagery Map:
- Imported the selected parcel boundary
- Updated the symbology and added labelling using the parcel attribute data
- Changed the basemap depending on the map to either "Imagery" or "Outdoor" from ArcGIS Pro's library of basemaps.
Treatment Map:
- Imported selected parcel boundary into Vibrant Planet's Wildfire Modelling software
- Ran several iterations based on parameters such as treatment size and budget.
- Exported the final iteration and imported it into ArcGIS Pro
- Reprojected the data to California StatePlan Albers 1983
- Updated the basemap to imagery, per the forester's preference
- Symbolized the treatment layers with transparency set to ~40%
All Maps:
- Created a template layout for forester maps for the future.
- Used the same layout and exported the three maps with small changes to the legends.
Key Outputs
3 PDF maps that could be used by foresters to help them prepare to walk the grounds of a new project.
Impact/Results
Maps to help reduce the time needed for foresters to prepare for new projects, and a way to ground - truth the wildfire modelling treatment data.
Lessons Learned
Online modelling tools are only as accurate as they are updated.
These maps show the basic information that foresters need in order to scope out a potential project area. Topographic and imagery basemaps are vital to them in order to better understand things like elevation, ground cover, structures, canopy cover, and water ways. local road data is also included in order to help identify proximity to roadways for work equipment.
